Kvartersnamnet Asken är känt sedan 1729.

”Växte möjligen någon större ask inom kvadraten. Bland tomtägarna 1728 fanns ingen med namnet Ask eller dess sammansättningar. Måhända fanns någon bemärkt hyresgäst med namn, varifrån kvadratens namn sprungit”, skrev Edward Ringborg i Till Norrköpingskrönikan.

Storbacken i Smedby namngavs den 17 mars 1932.

Gatan har fått sitt namn efter de topografiska förhållandena och är tillsammans med Bergstigen det enda av 1932 års namn i Smedby som inte bytts ut.

Norra Promenaden

Mittenpartiet av Norra Promenaden anlades 1858 som Nya Allén. Ritningsförslaget gjordes 1855 av trädgårdsarkitekten Knut Forsberg och förebilden var Paris som vid denna tid genomgick en stor ombyggnad under ledning av George Eugéne Haussmann. År 1899 förlängdes den väster om Kungsgatan och i öster ända fram till Strömmen. Sammanlagt 1216 lindar användes till den 2,9 km långa Norra Promenaden.

Norra Promenaden kallades Nya Allén ännu 1861 men på 1879 års karta har den dagens namn. Den gata som anlades parallellt med Promenaden (i dag det norra körfältet) hette ursprungligen Stationsgatan, men namnet slopades 1951 eftersom det ansågs ”olämpligt att samma gata bar två namn”.

Kvarteret Lärkan i Östantill namngavs senast 1876.

Namngrupp ”fåglar”. På 1870-talet skedde en stadsplaneutvidgning åt sydost och sydväst. Flertalet av de nya kvartersnamnen saknade ”varje casual förbindelse med marken”, konstaterade Edward Ringborg missnöjt. Fåglar fick ge namn åt sju av dem: Göken, Lärkan, Sparven, Staren, Svalan, Trasten och Ärlan.

Vid Garvaregatan låg förr flera garverier. Bland annat ägde garvaren mäster Lundgren kvarteret Asken Nr 4 och garvaren rådman Åkerström kvarteret Busken Nr 1. År 1904 beslutade stadsfullmäktige att förlänga Garvaregatan, dels från Slottsgatan ut till Norra Promenaden, dels genom kvarteret Vårdtornet fram till Västgötegatan. Där fanns tidigare Trångsundsgatan (även kallad Trångsund). Garvaregatan finns med på kartorna från 1769.

Kvarteret Musköten i Nordantill var namngivet 1729.

Smedjegatan och de omgivande kvarteren Karbinen och Musköten samt kanske även Hållhaken och Spetsen är ”minnen af det gamla gevärsfaktoriet på en holme i strömmen här utanför, för hvars arbetare de nämnda områdena upplätos till boplatser”, skrev Arthur Nordén.

Fältskärsgatan i Klingsberg namngavs den 12 mars 1931.

Området i norra delen av Fältskärsgatan köptes upp och styckades av till tomter av Norrköpings siste fältskär Ernst Pehrsson (1875–1955) och gatan genom villaområdet fick sitt namn ”till erinran om det gamla fältskärsyrket”. Ernst Pehrson hade sin mottagning på Drottninggatan och hans namnskylt och reklamtavla som består av en inramad samling tänder finns på Norrköpings stadsmuseum.

”Namnet Sågklingan relaterar till den verksamhet som bedrivs vid Bravikens pappersbruk”, skriver namnberedningen.

Röbrinksvägen i Skärblacka namngavs senast 1970.

Röbrinken utgjordes av två backar på landsvägen mellan Liggom och Lövhagen. ”Senare har vägen rätats här så att den ej går över de branta backarna, landsvägen gick förr här genom öde mörk skog, man säger att rövare höll till här till förtret för vägfarare så att namnet skulle komma av Rövarebrinken”, heter det i ortnamnsregistret. Även en åker vid backarna kallades Röbrinken och på denna uppfördes villaområdet med samma namn.
